Alphonso Davies reveals why he chose Bayern over Premier League clubs

We’re very happy everything panned out the way it did and he wound up at Bayern.

It’s a well known fact that Premier League clubs were monitoring Alphonso Davies before he decided to move from the Vancouver Whitecaps to Bayern Munich. It was revealed last month that personnel in Manchester United’s front office had overlooked the Canadian international back when he was only 14 years old and had been scouted at the Dallas Cup. Fast-forward four years and he officially joined Bayern on January 1st of 2019.

Davies just recently put pen to paper on a a new contract keeping him at Bayern through 2025 and he was asked about the interest he had from other clubs before he wound up choosing Bayern (Manchester Evening News). At the time he was made aware of the fact that Premier League clubs were interested in him, he said he was just solely focused on the Whitecaps and that it was his representatives doing all of the work behind the scenes:

I know there were rumors about England. I know different teams had approached my agents. My full focus at the time was Vancouver and trying to get into the play-offs. Behind the scenes, my people were dealing with it so I didn’t need to think about it a whole lot.

Once he was able to sit down with representatives from Bayern, he said, he was convinced that it was the right place for him to go, even after hearing pitches from clubs in England. Being able to make the move at such a young age, he said, is something that’s been highly beneficial for his motivation:

Teams approached my people and they relayed the messages to me. We sat down with Bayern Munich and as soon as I heard them, there was no hesitation that I wanted to join this team. I love playing for this club. Being so young and coming here so early is even more of a motivation.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but it’s certainly safe to say that Davies made the right choice in coming to Bayern. He’s more than exceeded expectations at the left back position this season and is on pace to become one of the top defenders in the world, if he’s not already considered to be right now. More good things to come, Phonzie!
