Huge news: Bayern Munich have officially extended Alphonso Davies until 2025. The Canadian, who initially joined the team as a winger from the Vancouver Whitecaps, has cemented himself as one of the best left-backs in the world since taking over for David Alaba this season. The extension comes with a deserved bump in pay and locks down Phonzie for the foreseeable future, which should help keep prying eyes in check.

Here’s the official confirmation tweet from the club’s Twitter:

And as if that coronavirus signing photo were not enough, Davies happily announced his deal in his own colorful way:

The Bundesliga allows a maximum contract length of five years, which means that Davies’ 2025 contract was the longest extension he could have received from Bayern under the current rules. Club Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was pleased with his development, saying (fcbayern.com):

Alphonso has developed very well at FC Bayern and has earned this contract extension with his impressive performances. We are happy that he will remain with FC Bayern in the long term. He delights our fans not only with the way he plays, but also with the way he is off the pitch

Executive Oliver Kahn congratulated the Canadian on performing at such a high level at Bayern, which is definitely no easy feat:

Alphonso Davies is a player who has already achieved a high level of performance at a young age and at the same time still has great potential for development. Anyone who can consistently play at the top level at FC Bayern at such a young age can have a great career ahead of them. We are all happy to have him with us in the long term. He brings an incredible amount to the table and we are sure that we will still have a lot of joy with him.

Meanwhile Hasan Salihamidzic, who is credited with bringing Davies to Munich, had this to say:

I am very pleased that FC Bayern and Alphonso have made a long-term commitment to each other. With his speed, his enthusiasm and his professional attitude, Alphonso is an ideal fit for our team. He is also a real asset in human terms. It is up to all of us here to ensure that Alphonso continues to stabilise his very good performance, that he takes the next steps in his development with the same concentration and courage as he has up till now.

Needless to say, this is a huge moment for the youngster and good news for Bayern fans around the world. Alphonso Davies has captured the hearts and minds of football fans with his brilliant displays this season. His highlights include shutting down Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho at the Allianz Arena and playing Chelsea off the park in the Champions League game at Stamford Bridge. He is certifiably world class, arguably a top-3 winger in the world right now alongside Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson and Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy.

On his new contract and commitment to the Bavarians, the youngster had this to say:

I am very happy. FC Bayern is one of the best clubs in the world, and for me it’s a dream come true to play here. I felt happy from day one. I want to win as many titles as possible with this club. The mentality of always wanting to win everything is in FC Bayern’s DNA.

Congratulations, Phonzie!
