It’s still unclear at this point just how long Manuel Neuer’s contract with Bayern Munich will be extended as it’s currently set to expire next year. It’s understood that the front office is leaning more towards a two-year extension while Neuer himself feels that he should be extended for another five years. Five years might be a bit of a stretch, especially since Bayern has already signed Alexander Nubel from Schalke.

In a recent interview with SportBild (via Goal), Oliver Kahn said he feels that Nubel will greatly benefit from serving as Neuer’s backup for at least a season. He feels that the 23-year old will continue to grow and develop working alongside Neuer. While he didn’t directly reveal how long he thinks Neuer’s contract will be extended for, Kahn said that he has no doubts Neuer can continue to play at the highest level for years to come:

In general, as I have shown myself, goalkeepers can of course play into old age, but maintaining a high level is a great challenge. In Alexander Nubel, we get a highly talented goalkeeper, who has the chance to develop and learn behind Manuel Neuer. Not many have the opportunity to work with the best goalkeeper in the world every day.

The next transfer window is likely going to look entirely different with how much the COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted football as we know it, and Bayern was potentially planning for a big summer in the transfer market. Hansi Flick’s opinions differ from some of the other member’s of Bayern’s front office when it comes to transfers. He feels that he should be able to veto transfers proposed by the sporting director or other front office members, which has sparked speculation that he has a handful of disagreements with Hasan Salihamidzic. Kahn said that Bayern’s front office is all “marching in one direction” and revealed that they’re all on the same page despite what other people may think:

Of course, the coach is a very important factor in terms of transfer plans. Hasan Salihamidzic, Hansi Flick and I discussed and coordinated this and other topics intensively.
