Bayern Munich takes Tuesday off (AZ)
After the team enjoyed an extended weekend and no practice on Monday, AZ reports that Bayern Munich will also not hold practice on Tuesday. The club will reportedly decide what to do next today.
The DFL meanwhile has officially suspended the season until April 2 (AZ). “That of course does not mean that we will play again starting April 3,” chairman Christian Seifert said. Seifert said that ghost games would be the only means to continue the season at all in the near future. Finances are the primary reason. Seifert explained,
The clubs’ biggest revenues are media and sponsoring revenues. And if they all are lost, it’s just a question of time until things go south. Otherwise, there may soon no longer be twenty pro clubs.
UEFA wants that money
Exclusive: UEFA to demand £275m from clubs and leagues to postpone Euro 2020 by a year | @David_Ornsteinhttps://t.co/BR86hnb0BE
— The Athletic UK (@TheAthleticUK) March 16, 2020
The Athletic writes,
This is what UEFA estimates it will cost to push the European Championships back by 12 months to June 2021 and will be relayed to European football’s stakeholders in emergency meetings on Tuesday, during which it will be confirmed the tournament will be delayed by a year.
That may be a hard sell to the clubs and leagues who are currently scrambling to find a way to see out the current season so as not to forfeit millions more in broadcasting and sponsorship revenue.
The measures will be discussed today, but The Athletic’s sources fear that any potential decision will be “superseded by events” in the ongoing coronavirus crisis — Uli Hoeness predicted the same thing just days ago.
