After a scoreless first half, the Bayern Munich Frauen powered through three goals in the second half to sprint to a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on the road. The result avenges a shocking 2-1 loss that Bayern suffered in the first part of the season at home against Leverkusen.
Bayern’s opener wouldn’t come until the 52nd minute from the boot of Lineth Beerensteyn. Lina Magull played a ball out of midfield through the backline to Carolin Simon. As the goalkeeper was drawn out, Simon squared the ball into the path of Beerensteyn who slid and poked the ball into the back of the empty net.
Magull doubled Bayern’s lead just three minutes later, heading home a cross from Sydney Lohmann. Then, in stoppage time, Simone Boye scored her first-ever league goal for Bayern with a header on a corner kick.
Bayern XI: Benkarth - Simon, Laudehr, Ilestedt, Gwinn - Magull, Demann (81. Škorvánková), Lohmann (88. Boye) - Dallmann, Islacker (57. Damnjanović), Beerensteyn
“We’re glad that the our first league match of the year 2020 went well for us. We very deservedly took three points back home with us from Leverkusen,” head coach Jens Scheuer said. “Had we converted our chances more consistently, the result could have been even higher, but we’re happy about three important points and thus have drawn completely equal with Hoffenheim.”
Coupled with Hoffenheim’s loss to Wolfsburg this week, Bayern have moved level with them on points but still trail via goal differential (+29 vs +28!). Next weekend, Bayern will host SC Sand at the FC Bayern Campus in the hope of keeping as close to leaders Wolfsburg as possible.
