All of the Bundesliga teams have qualified from the 2020/21 Champions League group-stages. After RB Leipzig’s victory yesterday and Borussia Mönchengladbach’s progression tonight, Germany is well represented in the round of 16.
It was far from an easy task. The two German favourites to win the group was Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, two teams that predictably did win their respective groups with relative ease.
However, both RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach, progression to the round of 16 looked more doubtful. Leipzig got drawn in the infamous ’Group of Death’ that included last year’s finalists Paris SG, old power-house Manchester United, and the emerging outsider Istanbul Başakşehir. Although a tough group, Julian Nagelsmann’s fancied their chances and deservedly qualified from the group after a good performance against Manchester United.
For Mönchengladbach, the task was more difficult. They faced two traditional Champions League veterans, Real Madrid and Inter, and one modern one, Shakhtar Donetsk. Today, they got the luck that they lacked in the first two games. Even though they were out-played by Real Madrid and deservedly lost with 2-0, a draw in the other match between Inter and Shakhtar would mean that they still progressed to the round of 16.
The game at the San Siro ended 0-0, and Die Fohlen fans will continue to see their team play against the very best in world football.
Casual Bundesliga fanatics will do the same.
