Bayern Munich loanee Christian Früchtl has yet to make an appearance for FC Nürnberg as Der Club has opted to roll with Christian Mathenia for all of its 2. Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal matches this season.
From a Bayern Munich perspective, this loan arrangement appears to be a major failure for one of the club’s top goalkeeping prospects.
The question is, however, why can’t Früchtl get one start, let alone break into the lineup on a consistent basis?
FC Nürnberg sporting director Dieter Hecking insinuated to Bild that Früchtl’s presence at Der Club has been used to motivate incumbent goalkeeper Christian Mathenia. When asked if the loan made “little sense”, Hecking did not dispute the assertion.
“That may be. But we have to look at ourselves first,” said Hecking. “Christian Früchtl has played a major role in ensuring that Christian Mathenia is in very good shape again. It is certainly not an easy situation for him at the moment because the goalkeeper position is rarely changed.”
It sounds like it might be time for Bayern Munich to pull back Früchtl and find him a new loan destination.
