Growing older always allows an athlete to reflect on things and gain perspective. For PSV Eindhoven star Mario Götze, his transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich is easily the most controversial and debated period of career.
Götze, however, has a full grasp on why he made the move.
In an interview with Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad, Götze opened up on why he elected to make the leap to Bayern Munich, despite being comfortably on the road to success under Jürgen Klopp at Dortmund.
“I was just 21 when I went from Dortmund to Bayern,” said Götze. “That, of course, also gave a storm of publicity. In retrospect I might have stayed longer with Kloppo, but it was certainly not a mistake to go to Bayern. I wanted to challenge myself and get to know Pep’s philosophy. With Bayern we reached three semifinals in the Champions League and Guardiola taught me to see football from very different positions on the field. Guardiola literally put you anywhere in competitions. Arjen Robben can also talk about that.”
We all know the twists and turns that Götze’s career has taken from that point, but he appears to be happy with PSV Eindhoven and eager to take advantage of the opportunity that he has been given.
