DFB-Pokal Round-up: Josh Sargent nets one for Werder Bremen, Wout Weghorst is a beast, and MORE!

Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen took care of business, while Mainz 05 continued to struggle.

The second round of the DFB-Pokal continued yesterday and below are the results:

  • Rot-Weiss Essen 3-2 Fortuna Düsseldorf

Quick take: Rouwen Hennings had a brace for F95, but it was not enough to keep Essen from advancing.

  • Wolfsburg 4-0 SV Sandhausen

Quick take: Wout Weghorst continued his excellent run of form with a brace.

  • Mainz 05 2-2 VfL Bochum 1848

(AET — VfL Bochum 1848 win 3-0 on penalties)

Quick take: Well, this week has been a certified dumpster fire for Mainz. They should bring back the Twister board carnival kits to change the karma surrounding the team.

  • Hannover 0-3 Werder Bremen

Quick take: Josh Sargent banged home a goal in the 32nd minute to pace Die Werderaner. In addition, here’s a little-known fact is that our own Tom Adams owns a Hannover 96 jersey.

  • SV Wehen Wiesbaden 0-0 SSV Jahn Regensburg

(AET — SSV Jahn Regensburg win 4-2 on penalties

Quick take: SV Wehen Wiesbaden only completed 67% of its passes in this game. I’d probably take that for Carson Wentz this season in Philadelphia, but not for a squad in the DFB-Pokal.

  • VfB Stuttgart 1-0 SC Freiburg

Quick take: Sasa Kalajdzic’s 15th minute goal secured what I’d consider a mild upset over Christian Streich’s squad.

There are two more fixtures left to complete this round as Bayer Leverkusen will host Eintracht Frankfurt on January 12th and Holstein Kiel will try and play the role of “Giant Killer” against Bayern Munich on January 13th.
