Lothar Matthäus believes Bayern Munich can repeat for five trophies in 2021

Bayern Munich won a grand total of five titles in 2020, which is no easy feat. However, Lothar Matthäus believes it is possible to repeat this in 2021. In an exclusive interview with Bundesliga.com that was shared with Bavarian Football Works, the German legend tells us why.

Matthäus believes in the team to do it all again. He states that so far in the Champions League, Bayern Munich was among the the best teams in the group stage, along with Manchester City. It is hard to argue how dominant the Bavarians were this last year both domestically and in Europe.

“I see Bayern as one of the favorites to win the Champions League and nationally, I think we all know that they are always the favorite. In every competition. Even in the DFB Cup”, said Matthäus.

While this is true, the favorite doesn’t always win.

The former Bayern midfielder went on to say that Bayern Munich can be beaten, of course. However, he states that they would only lose if Bayern made mistakes and another team went faultless. Matthäus backs RB Leipzig as Bayern’s strongest competitor for the league title through the experience they have collected, including their run into the Champions League semi-finals last season.

Leipzig’s win over a traditional team such as Manchester United will give them great confidence, Matthäus believes. If you can beat teams like those, you believe you can win big games against Bayern Munich.

“In that sense, I think Leipzig are a bit closer to FC Bayern compared to the rest of the league,” Matthäus argued.

Bayern will certainly be pushing for major silverware once again this year, however, only time will tell what the team can accomplish. A back-to-back treble would certainly be something special, but for a team with this quality, nothing is unthinkable.
