The shock of Hansi Flick being snubbed for the (questionably named) FIFA The Best Awards has not subsided. The man single-handedly fixed a battered and bruised Bayern Munich, won a continental treble as interim manager, won the Champions League with a 100% win record, got a couple of Super Cups along the way too, blew Barcelona back to the Stone Age, and STILL got robbed of an award that no other manager in the world deserved in the calendar year.
And if all that wasn’t enough to warm your heart as a Bayern fan, here’s something else lovely that Hansi did: he did his duty as a good son.
After Bayern’s 2-1 win over Wolfsburg, Flick took to the media and spoke: “I promised my mother, whose birthday is today, three points,” before looking into the camera and saying “Well Mom, happy birthday!”
It was a hard fought win, with Bayern reliant on some brilliant individual performances from Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski to hand Wolfsburg their first Bundesliga defeat of the season. Flick also played a role in the win, though, with an unorthodox formation borne out of a crazy mind and a crazier injury list.
Well, perhaps that crazy formation was the result of desperation to win that game for his mother. It was something that worked in a weird way, and something that probably won’t be seen on a regular basis, but it marked a special occasion, and a very special one indeed.
Flick is known to be a family man, having named his wife as his number one confidant. It is now clear that he values his biggest supporter in his mother as well. “My family are all Bayern fans — now more than ever,” said Flick with a grin.
Shoutout to Flick, the REAL best coach of the year, and another shoutout to the most special women in our lives: our mothers!
