Leon Goretzka could have gone to Liverpool, but knew Bayern Munich was “the right move”

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has developed into one of the world’s best midfielders, but he easily could have ended up with Liverpool after leaving Schalke.

When Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka was just an up-and-comer with Schalke 04 he had an opportunity to head to England prove himself in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield at Liverpool.

Goretzka, however, told The Athletic that he had another idea of where he wanted to establish himself and that the option presented by Bayern Munich was simply a better fit.

“They were a consideration, of course,” said Goretzka of Liverpool. “They’re a great club and their development since Klopp came has been amazing. We’re all a little proud of him winning the title, but I took a long time making my decision, and I was 100 percent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.”

In retrospect, Goretzka, whose coming-out party for all of the European powers occurred at the 2017 Confederations Cup, certainly had some terrific options to choose from for his post-Schalke 04 career.

Regardless, the 25-year-old’s intuition proved to be correct as Goretzka has built himself into one of the world’s best midfielders and won a treble in the process.

Not too shabby, eh?
