Injured Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has been an impactful presence wherever he has played. Whether it was with the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS or with the German giants, the 20-year-old has made his mark.
Clearly, people have noticed.
Despite the fact that he has just 66 MLS games under his belt (and 91 senior team games overall for Vancouver), Davies has been included on a list of 134 contenders for a spot on Major League Soccer’s all-time roster, which will include 25 spots per a report from GlobalNews.ca.
The 25-man roster number is related to the league’s celebration of its 25th anniversary.
Whether or not Davies makes the cut will be interesting to see as there is a star-studded list of candidates that could make competition fierce. International stars David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Cobi Jones, Sebastian Giovinco, Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robbie Keane, Wayne Rooney, David Villa, Chris Wondolowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips are among the heavyweights also under consideration.
Per the report, the final 25 will be chosen by a voting panel of more than 200 panelists, comprised of “MLS greats and emeritus” (ex-players, coaches, and staff), current MLS club staff members, media members, and the league’s broadcast partners.
Factors for consideration on the list and also for voting include:
- Individual honors such as Best XI, MVP, Golden Boot, Defender/Goalkeeper of the Year, or all-star selections.
- Major team trophies such as: MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield, U.S. Open Cup, international club competitions.
- Extraordinary off-field contributions or impact.
- Rank among the all-time leaders in key statistical areas.
The 25 Greatest will be announced — without a formal 1 through 25 ranking — on December 9th, just three days before the MLS Cup final.
