Bayern Munich’s third attempt to extend David Alaba’s contract has failed

Alaba’s situation at Bayern has been the subject for gossip and debate, and recent reports suggest that contract extension talks have broken down.

One of Bayern Munich’s most prized possessions and a ‘‘home-grown’’ academy player, David Alaba has been a crucial player for the club for the last decade. Despite winning his second Champions League title for the club, Alaba was under the spotlight for the majority of the summer transfer window, as his representatives and the Bayern management continuously failed to reach common ground regarding a contract extension.

A few hours ago, Christian Falk from Bild reported that the third attempt of extending Alaba’s contract negotiations has failed. This is not good news, especially since Alaba seems to have rediscovered his form from last season as he is getting better with every game. If not extended, the player could be expected to leave on a free next summer, which would be a huge loss for Bayern.

When further questioned by a fan, regarding whether Bayern and Alaba’s entourage would continue talks in the future, Falk’s reply was discouraging:

This news is a confirmation over the fear that that Alaba would play out his contract, before possibly moving to a different club next season. Alaba defused the rumors, saying that he was fully focused on giving his all for Bayern this season, and taking everything one game at a time.

If he does end up leaving, this isn’t a loss that would cripple the first team, since Lucas Hernandez has shown that he is more than capable of taking the reins at LCB, putting in stellar performances this season at both LB and LCB. However, Alaba’s unparalleled build-up play from the back, superb passing, and great reading of the play will be assets Bayern will be worse without.
