Lucas Hernandez is slowly but surely recovering from his ankle injury. He has participated in team training for almost two weeks now and his comeback is very close. He even might be ready next week, when Bayern Munich faces RB Leipzig.
In today’s press conference (via AZ), Hansi Flick talked about the situation with Lucas Hernandez, David Alaba, and Alphonso Davies.
Currently, the performance of both [Davies and Alaba] is simply great.
There is no doubt who will start this weekend’s match against Mainz. But, Hansi speculates that Lucas Hernandez will be available for next week’s matchday against Leipzig.
Lucas has been back in team training for about ten days. I think that he might be available next week.
Who will play against RB Leipzig?
Next week’s match will probably be the most important match for Bayern since the beginning of the Rückrunde. Only one point separates the teams (currently) and a win for either team could mean the world. But will Hernandez play in this important match? Flick hopes to bring him back into his form before his injury:
Competition is important. Lucas knows that. He has enormous qualities. We have to see that we bring him up to the level he had before his injury; ideally, of course, to the level he was at before his first injury at Atletico.
BFW analysis
It is probably too soon for Hernandez to start such an important match immediately after he has recovered. Also, it would probably be bad to break-up such an in-form defensive duo in David Alaba and Alphonso Davies. But when Hernandez is back at his best, who do you want to see playing in Bayern’s defense?
