In recent months, Bayern Munich have been interested in signing wingers. This is mainly due to the departure of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery and the lack of depth occupying these positions — there are only two (injury-prone) wingers (permanently) at the club. Bayern’s winger search has included the likes of Leroy Sane and Ousmane Dembele. However, France Football are now reporting that the club is interested in buying Thomas Lemar from Atletico Madrid.
The 24 year old winger joined Atleti in 2018, to the tune of 60m euros. And it’s that figure which the top-brass of the Spanish club want, if Lemar is to leave. Bayern were interested in Lemar before he initially went to Madrid, but, for him to sign now, they would require the Colchoneros to reduce the fee needed — a proposition that’s unlikely, given that EPL money hoarders Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham are all said to be interested in the player.
A few things that must be mentioned with any talk about Bayern signing Lemar are his stats: he hasn’t managed a goal or assist in 947 minutes this season(!), while his six G+A’s in 18/19 were mediocre at best.
Bayern really need a winger who can match trickery and speed with end product. Furthermore, the club’s wing situation for years now has been beset by injuries — with coaches often having to play Thomas Muller or players not up to the standard in crucial CL ties. Lemar himself is currently injured and has been known to spend large periods of time on the sidelines. Bayern really don’t need another winger that is susceptible to injuries at this point in time.
