Since joining Bayern Munich in 2015, Joshua Kimmich has witnessed a huge transition in the team’s structure — from a roster filled with players rich in experience like Philipp Lahm and Arjen Robben to a squad full of prodigies like Alphonso Davies and Joshua Zirkzee.
While talking about transfer reinforcements, Kimmich made it clear that he is not satisfied about the ongoing situation at Bayern. When you look at the squad that flew to Doha for the winter training camp, you can glean the changes that have happened in the team over the course of a few years. Kimmich said (via Goal):
At the training camp in Doha you can see that we’ve actually only got 12 or 13 professional players in the squad and the rest are youth. The table for the youth players was full. That wasn’t the case during my first year at Bayern.
If there is one thing that keeps haunting the Bavarians, it’s injuries. The team needs more players who are fit to cover for the injured ones. It is an urgent need of the hour for the board to bring in more players. Kimmich believes that the only way to make sure the team will be better is by expanding the squad. He said:
We might play until the end of the season in all three competitions and we have lots of international players too, so we need more players who are fit. Of course we have a lot of injured players. Gnabry couldn’t train, Lewandowski and Coman will return soon. [Javi] Martinez also has a knock and [Niklas] Süle and [Lucas] Hernandez will take time. The clubs know that so they have to make a decision. At the moment, the squad is not big enough.
A few days ago, Flick told the press he hoped to sign two or more new players to reinforce the squad — and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic was reportedly surprised by the manager’s comments. But Kimmich’s comments now echo Flick’s, who predicted that “the players will not see things differently.”
With the Rückrunde beginning on 19th January, it is necessary to make sure that the whole team understands the responsibility they have. Currently in the third position of the Bundesliga, there are lots of things to be done within a very short span of time. Like Kimmich mentioned, reinforcing the squad could really help boost the team at a time like this.
