Injury update: Bayern Munich yet to decide on Lewandowski’s fitness, Serge Gnabry out for January

Things are looking pretty dire at the Sabener Strasse — Bayern are struggling on the injury front.

Despite not having played any games for the past three weeks, Bayern Munich are reeling from an injury crisis so severe that it threatens to derail the club’s Bundesliga restart. With the game against Hertha Berlin just a week away, the Bavarians are set to miss some key players from the lineup, some of whom may be irreplaceable.

According to AZ reporter Maximillian Koch, Serge Gnabry is doubtful for the rest of January. The winger has been suffering from Achilles tendon problems since the beginning of the winter training camp in Qatar, and had to cut his camp short to return to Munich. The same goes for Kingsley Coman (knee), Lucas Hernandez (ankle), and Javi Martinez (hamstring).

Immediately, the wing and central defense positions look very thin for Bayern. Both Lucas and Coman were supposed to have recovered by now, but it seems that their initial timelines were a little too optimistic (which seems like a trend).

Robert Lewandowski, meanwhile, did not feature in the club’s friendly game against Nurnberg on Saturday. The Polish international striker opted out of the Qatar training camp, staying in Munich to continue his rehab following a groin operation in December. According to Koch, a decision on Lewandowski won’t be taken before the end of the week — suggesting that he’s still not at 100%.

This is, of course, not what anyone wants to hear. Berlin are always a tough opponent for Bayern, and have already taken 2 points from the Bavarians this season. With the team already 4 points behind Leipzig in the table, Hansi Flick can hardly afford any more dropped points going forward.

It is questionable whether Serge #Gnabry will still play in January. The same applies to the trio of Kingsley Coman, Lucas Hernández and Javi Martínez. With Robert #Lewandowski a decision will not be made until the end of the week.
