Per a report by Evening Standard journalist James Robson, Manchester City is actively trying to sign Leroy Sane to a contract extension while the player is recovering from knee surgery. According to Robson, Manchester City’s effort will not slow down despite the 23-year-old being unavailable until at least February. Pep Guardiola’s club would like to get a deal done before Bayern Munich can make a formal offer this winter:
Manchester City are trying to convince Leroy Sane to sign a new deal before Bayern Munich have chance to launch their next bid for the winger. Contract negotiations are continuing despite the Germany international being ruled out until at least February with knee ligament damage. City remain hopeful he will commit his future to the Etihad despite him being widely expected to complete a move to Bayern before suffering his injury last month.
Sources in Germany claim they could be ready to bid as early as January, despite Sane’s recovery from the operation on his anterior cruciate ligament expected to rule him out until February at the earliest.
Robson also reiterated that any club looking to sign Sane will face a steep charge. Manchester City is reportedly not going to back down from its €153 million price tag:
The Premier League champions have always maintained Sane is not for sale, but will demand £137million if he is to leave the club before his current deal ends in 2021. Bayern did not come up with an offer anywhere near that figure this summer, and it remains unclear whether they will be prepared to meet City’s valuation.
Still, Manchester City would prefer to retain one of its top talents:
City have already held extensive talks with the 23-year-old and believed they had reached a breakthrough during the close-season. Those negotiations then suffered a setback, placing fresh uncertainty over the player’s future.
Manchester City’s attempt to sign Sane is to be expected. By all accounts, the club is still interested in keeping Sane as part of its core group for the future. The only question that remains is how much of a salary increase it will take to keep the young talent in the Premier League. With his contract due to expire in 2021, however, time is ticking on the Germany international’s required stay in England.
With each passing day, Sane draws closer to a lame duck season in 2020-2021 where Manchester City would risk losing leverage and risking the possibility of letting the player go for free if it cannot re-sign him or sell him away. One of the theories surrounding Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Sane is that the player might be using the Bavarians as leverage to get a more lucrative deal out of his current club. That hypothesis could be put to the test in the coming weeks.
