Bayern Munich’s competitive campaign is officially underway after they lost out 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup. Manchester City’s Leroy Sané still has not been signed, even though Bayern’s has pursued the winger since before the summer transfer window even opened. Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard, and Fiete Arp remain the only three signings Bayern has made this summer, though Hernandez and Pavard were both announced in the winter.
In a recent interview captured by SportBild, midfielder Leon Goretzka still feels that Bayern will complete a few more signings before the Bundesliga transfer window closes in September. Bayern’s current squad, he feels, won’t be the complete squad that will start the the season:
I think it’s safe to assume that this won’t be the squad we enter the season with. I think something else will happen. Then we’ll be fully prepared.
When he was specifically asked about exactly how many more signings Bayern might make, Goretzka declined to put a number on it:
I don’t want to put it into numbers, but it’s clear that we still need something.
Having been teammates with Leroy Sané at both Schalke and the German National Team, Goretzka would love to see his compatriot come to Bayern, as would a majority of the players in Bayern’s squad. While Goretzka may want to be reunited with his former Schalke teammate, he’s relaxed about the transfer because he feels he ultimately has little say in the matter:
I’m totally relaxed. I think some others get too stressed out about it. I can only speak for myself. As a player you have little influence on these things. Accordingly, it doesn’t make any sense to waste energy worrying about it.
Bayern have until September 2nd to make signings, but a lot of pressure had been placed on the Sané transfer under the assumption that Manchester City would want to sign a like-for-like replacement by August 8th, the deadline for the Premier League transfer window. The latest reports out of Germany suggest that the knee injury Sané suffered during City’s match against Liverpool in the Community Shield has complicated negotiations between City and Bayern, but the move could still theoretically happen since the Bundesliga transfer window remains open until September 2nd.
City has been linked with Juventus’ Joâo Cancelo, but such a move could be contingent on a considerable upfront fee from Bayern for Sané. They would have to bring Cancelo in by the deadline on Wednesday. Hence, if City signs Cancelo, that could be taken as a positive development in the Sané deal. Of course, there are a lot of moving parts to this, but nonetheless, Goretzka’s claim that Bayern will surely make more signings before September 2nd seems increasingly likely.
