Arjen Robben decided to put an end to his successful footballing career after dealing with numerous injuries throughout the last season. The Dutch winger won everything with Bayern Munich but also showed his worth while playing for Real Madrid, Chelsea, and PSV.
Now, only two months after he made his decision, Robben is having some second thoughts. The 35-year-old refused to rule out the return to playing football in his latest interview with Dutch radio station NPO Radio.
Maybe in a month or two, I’ll have a strange feeling that I miss the whole thing too much and will decide I have to go back. But of course, it doesn’t get any easier the longer you’re retired. I do not rate the chances [of returning] very high.
Before he announced his retirement, it was confirmed by Kicker that he had numerous offers from all over the world, including China, the USA, and the Netherlands. But, in light of his never-ending injury problems, Robben decided that it was for the best to end his career. He said at the time,
The love of the game and the conviction that you can still deal with the whole world, in opposition to the fact that not everything goes as you want it and you are no longer the 16-year-old boy who had no idea what injury means.
But perhaps the burning desire to play football again will be enough to change his mind, and we might see him cutting inside a few more times.
