The FC Bayern Munich Frauen have received their draw for the UEFA Women’s Champions League: the ladies will take on Sweden’s Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC. Bayern will travel to Sweden for the first leg of the tie on September 11th, while the return match will be held two weeks later on September 25th.
Bayern coach Jens Scheuer had this to say on the draw (per FCBayern.com):
We are happy about the draw and are looking forward to an interesting and ambitious team in Göteborg. Next to Arsenal London, Götenborg was one of the best teams in the pot of seeded teams. We will concentrate focused on preparing for our opponent and want to advance decisively to the round of 16 with hopefully two beautiful games.
Bayern newcomer and Sweden native Amanda Ilestedt was happy to get a chance to play in her homeland:
I am really happy that we are going to Sweden. It was exactly what Ali Riley and I wanted in the first place. Göteborg is a strong team with talented players playing beautiful offensive football.
To get a little more insight into Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC, I went directly to our main Swede, Marcus Iredahl, who gave me this excellent information:
It’s just sponsored by Kopparbergs’ brewery... haha that’s so cool actually.
Booze aside, there are some other interesting things about Kopparbergs/ Göteborg FC:
- The squad is based in Gothenburg, Sweden. (Guess where the original Goths came from...)
- Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC play their home games at Valhalla IP stadium in Gothenburg.
- The team colors are blue, white, and black.
- United States Women’s team star Christen Press played for Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC in 2012.
- American Taylor Leach is on the Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC roster. Leach, a 27-year-old defender who played collegiately at the University of South Carolina, has a nice little bio on the Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC website:
Taylor Leach is a safe and positionally comfortable center-back who communicate loads with her teammates and tries to steer her team from the back-line and the whole way up the pitch. Pronounced competitor, loves to win as much as she hates to lose.
The Frauen should be in for an exciting match-up and will no doubt be looking forward to playing against some quality competition.
