Bayern Munich won the first DFB-Pokal game of the season 3:1 against a fourth division side Energie Cottbus. The game wasn’t especially thrilling, but the boys did their job and went to the next round. Bayern (obviously) dominated throughout the whole game and Cottbus had very few chances from open play. Without further ado, here are our match awards!
Jersey swap: Berkan Taz
It is hard to choose a standout performance in opposing team because they didn’t show that much. They had few good attacks here and there but generally were unable to provide a serious threat to Manuel Neuer. Berkan Taz converted the only real chance into a goal — a penalty in the last minutes of the match.
Tip of the cap: Thiago Alcantara and Benjamin Pavard
The midfielder again showed why he’s so important for Bayern. His vision and passes can hardly be replaced. It is really interesting to see how he developed into a world-class number “6” in recent time. Today he showed some good tackling, even though he got himself booked for a badly-timed challenge. Pavard showed why he was bought. Stability, speed, good technique and quality defending. He had few good moments, but my favorite was when he won a ball from a relatively dangerous counter and then made a long ball to Leon Goretzka which led to Coman scoring a goal. It was amazing!
Golf Clap: Leon Goretzka
When Goretzka entered the game, Bayern’s play livened up a bit. In a short period, he managed to get an assist to his name and to score a goal himself. His running in space is a joy to watch and when injury-free, he is a menace for the opposition. Also, he finished the game with 87% accurate passes and two key passes. Leon is already a very valuable squad member and hopefully, he will have a great season!
Standing ovation: Robert Lewandowski
Another Pokal match and another goal for the Pole. He was a bit unlucky though because he hit a crossbar in the first half after a tremendous volley. He was a constant threat for Cottbus’ defense and probably deserved a few more goals today. It is always a pleasure to see how he pressures the defense and how he often tracks back to help defend. It’s always good to show to the younger players that you have to give your best, even against smaller teams.
Meister of the match: Kingsley Coman
This man was on fire today! But not only today, but his whole preseason was also very, very good. Today he scored only one goal. I say ‘only’ because he hit a crossbar with a Robin Van Persie-like header. Such a shame that it didn’t go in. Also the keeper had a moment of brilliance after Coman’s shot and saved it from few meters, but unfortunately for Cottbus, Lewandowski was there to bash the ball into the back of the net. So basically the Frenchmen could have easily scored a hat trick. Hopefully, Coman will continue with this momentum further on.
