Bayern Munich’s pre-season preparations are already more than halfway over. The first competitive fixtures of the 2019/2020 season are under two weeks away. The season’s first installment of Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund is just over a week away at Signal Iduna Park, and Bayern are looking to get off to a winning start, just as they had done last season.
In a report captured by Bild, center back Niklas Süle emphasized just how much Bayern want to start off on the right foot, bettering their success from last season:
We don’t want to win less than this year [i.e. in 2018/19].
Knowing how much Dortmund have reinforced their squad during the summer transfer window thus far, Bayern expect a threat from their bitter rivals once again. It took until the last matchday to decide the league title last season, and Dortmund are well and truly ready to put up another fight. The upcoming season, Süle feels, will be more difficult with the Dortmund threat:
Dortmund had a super team already last year. I think that it’ll be a really difficult season for us. It starts already with the Supercup. We have to make a mark there.
Süle also discussed recent comparisons drawn between himself and Mats Hummels, who left to rejoin Dortmund earlier this summer. There were debates circulating in the media over claims as to who the best German defender was (Hummels or Süle). Several players and managers voiced their opinions, including Niko Kovac and Liverpool (ex-Dortmund) manager Jürgen Klopp. While the talk could be taken as a form of flattery, Sule prefers not to give the question a second thought:
I don’t really care about it. I’m not going to take part in this discussion either. I’m happy when my performance is recognized, then I’ve done a good job. That’s how I want to keep it. I’ll try to deliver my very best performance.
Rest assured, Süle is an integral piece in Bayern’s back line and has established himself as one of the first names on Kovac’s team sheets. With the defensive reinforcements Bayern have made in both Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez, Süle will be leading a well-equipped, well-prepared defense this season.
