FULL TIME! That’s it. Bayern enjoys bragging rights at least tonight after a surprisingly competitive preseason match against Real Madrid. The game had it all: spectacular goals, some chippy plays, and a sending off for Sven Ulreich.
90+2’: Singh receives a great pass from Goretzka deep in Madrid’s penalty area. Singh spins and shoots — it goes in! But the goal is ruled offside.
90’: Three minutes of stoppage time will be played.
85’: GOAL Real! Rodrygo Goes takes a perfect free kick, firing the ball into the top right corner past Hoffmann’s reach.
81’: Oh dear. Kimmich makes a brazen backheel pass into empty space behind him. Rodrigo runs by him and dives over Sven Ulreich’s extended leg. The referee shows Ulreich the red card, and he’s off. Thorben Hoffmann is suited up and ready to come on, as Real sets up to take a free kick outside the box. Zaiser’s cameo is cut short.
75’: Now Singh gets a taste of the action: a nice deflected cross from Pavard reaches him, but he cannot beat Pavard. A moment later, Lewandowski nearly makes it 4-0 as he brings down another long ball in Madrid’s penalty area. But his first touch is poor, and he cannot get off a decent shot.
73’: Gnabry has another chance, but cannot place the shot past Navas.
73’: Substitutions: Sarpreet Singh comes on for Tolisso, and Maximilian Zaiser relieves Alaba.
69’: GOAL Bayern! Leon Goretzka intercepts a lazy pass deep in Madrid’s half. He drives forward and serves a sweet pass into the middle to Gnabry, who hammers it home!
67’: Serge Gnabry follows up with a wicket shot from out right. Navas parries it.
66’: GOAL! Lewandowski slots in a long ball from Niklas Sule to make it 2-0!
62’: Vinicius looked to be through on goal, but Pavard was there to block the shot. Ulreich didn’t have to made a save.
55’: Bayern have looked rather decent so far this half, probably because the Madrid lineup has no cohesion. Point to note; Kimmich is playing in midfield while Pavard is at RB.
Kickoff! Real Madrid have changed their entire XI for the second half. On comes Jovic, a player who we know quite well.
Halftime: Some observations from the half:
- Renato Sanches looks like a changed man. He’s playing with so much confidence, it seems like he’s matured 10 years in the space of a few months.
- It’s a shame pre-assists don’t count in football. The pass by Thomas Muller to set up Bayern’s opening goal was a beauty.
- Speaking of beauty — what a game by Thiago Alcantara. He’s been everywhere, and has kept Madrid’s midfield at bay.
- Arp has been relatively quiet, but he’s working hard.
- Coman’s end pass could use some work still.
43’: Madrid have pushed Bayern back into their box, if the Bavarians escape this half with the lead that’s going to be a miracle.
38’: Arp hits the crossbar after a sizzling dribble.
33’: Madrid have had lots of chances (courtesy of Eden Hazard) but Benzema and co. are having trouble finishing.
29’: Chances at both ends. Thiago took an excellent shot from outside the box, which was parried by Courtois.
24’: Karim Benzema forces a save from Manuel Neuer at close range.
20’: Looks like no one told these guys that it’s a friendly. They’re out out for blood out there. The tempo and intensity matches a UCL game.
14’: GOAL! Tolisso scores to make it 1-0 to Bayern. Amazing pass by Muller to Coman led to a cutback, and the Frenchman slotted it home after a rebound.
10’: Both teams look evenly matched. Real had the better of Bayern in the first 5 mins, but Bayern grew into the game.

One hour before kickoff: We have lineups! Jerome Boateng and Renato Sanches both start. We already got confirmation of Sanches’ future — could this mean Boateng also stays?

We’re back! The International Champions Cup continues as Bayern Munich take on Real Madrid in Houston, Texas. The Bavarians had a rough start to their preseason, losing 2-1 to Arsenal a few days ago, but the performance wasn’t bad so Niko Kovac and his men will be hoping to build on it in this coming game.
Real Madrid, for their part, have a bunch of new signings that they’ll want to try out — chief among them Eden Hazard. On Bayern’s end, the only new signings likely to take part will be Benjamin Pavard and Jann-Fiete Arp, both of whom showed a good account of themselves in the opener against Arsenal. I addition, we might get to see Alphonso Davies and Renato Sanches, neither of whom made an appearance in the previous game.
Since it’s still preseason, it’s difficult to take too much away from the performances. However, hopefully the team shows a good account of themselves against a potential Champions League contender, and we come out of the game with a victory.
