From “a priority” to a seemingly sure thing within the space of a day: Espanyol Barcelona midfielder Marc Roca has reportedly agreed to personal terms with Bayern Munich (Marca). Roca was the Bavarians’ second choice at defensive midfield after Atletico Madrid’s Rodri opted to follow Pep Guardiola to Manchester City.
Roca (22 years old) was a standout performer at the recent European U-21 Championship, providing an assist against Poland and scoring in the semifinal against France. He was moreover a stalwart for Espanyol last season, playing one minute shy of 3,500. Roca went the full 90 minutes in 35 matches and missed just 4 of 44 total in all competitions (transfermarkt.de).
Bayern hopes to persuade Espanyol to sell Roca for less than his €40 million release clause, but the Catalans have little reason to accept less. Roca is under contract for three more seasons, through June 2022. Negotiations will presumably not be easy.
