There has been a lot of discussion this week surrounding who the “best German defender” is: Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule or Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels.

Teammates just a few weeks ago, Sule and Hummels have been at the center of a mini-controversy that has branched out to include such luminaries as BVB sporting director Michael Zorc, Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and coach Niko Kovac, along with Hummels’ wife Cathy.

Now, Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus has become the latest figure to be thrown into the middle of this mess and Reus — not shockingly — had the best, most measured take to date. In a piece by kicker, Reus detailed how he sees both players.

When initially asked, Reus laughed and replied “Mats, of course”, but then went into his rationale on why both players are “excellent.”

Both Niklas and Mats are excellent central defenders. They bring with them all the facets of football: Both are good in the game structure. Niklas may be a bit faster than Mats, but Mats has a better eye for the opponent and the build out. We don’t have to start the discussion at all. Both are very good.

Reus went on to say that Hummels brings “an unbelievable amount of quality” to BVB and that the center-back has “shown a leadership personality both in Dortmund and in Munich.” Reus also was clear on how much Hummels means to Dortmund: “We expect a lot from him.”

Reus also commented on Dortmund’s tremendous transfer window, which has seen the club bring in Hummels, Nico Schulz (Hoffenheim), Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen), and Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Monchengladbach):

Everything must fit. We made good transfers and took a very good step forward last season. It’s up to us whether we can make it to the top this year.

With so much back-and-forth already in play already, the Bayern-Dortmund rivalry will surely be heightened for the 2019-2020 season.
