Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies channeled his inner-David Alaba and played at left-back to help lead Canada to a 7-0 domination of Cuba in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Davies, the former Vancouver Whitecaps star who Bayern will have cross-training at both wing-back and outside-back this upcoming season, often pushed forward to join Canada’s potent attack.
Canada striker Lucas Cavallini and wingers Junior Hoilett and Jonathan David combined for all seven goals. For his part, Davies looked comfortable and confident sitting deeper in the formation, but the 18-year-old clearly had the freedom to push up and join the attack at will.
Last week Canada ousted Martinique 4-0, where Davies was credited with an assist. Canada’s only loss of the group stage was an intense and feisty 3-1 defeat to Mexico. The opportunity to get more acclimated at outside back, where Davies has occasionally played in the past both internationally and with Vancouver, should help him as he prepares to rejoin Bayern in a few weeks.
