According to a new report by Bild (paywalled), former Bayern Munich defender (it hurts to say ‘former’) Mats Hummels rejected Manchester United ahead of his decision to join Borussia Dortmund. By doing so, he extended the long tradition of Bayern center backs rejecting United, first started by Jerome Boateng in the summer of 2018.
Keeping in mind that this is technically a rumor and all football rumors inhabit a tier of reliability only a slightly better than “fake news”, this is absolutely hilarious in so many ways. According to Bild, United offered a higher salary than Dortmund, but Hummels chose his former club anyway because he prefers to play in the Champions League. The man would rather get paid less money to be abused by the Yellow Wall than play at the Theater of Sadness that is Old Trafford.
When will Man United learn that Bayern’s defenders are off limits? You’d think that Boateng giving Jose Mourinho a personal phone call to tell him that he’s not interested would send a message, but apparently they were stubborn enough to entertain the idea of Sule joining them.
How long will it be until they make a move for Lucas Hernandez or Benjamin Pavard? Place your bets below.
