Niklas Süle talks about controlling his weight in the offseason

He’s a bigger defender than most, but he does what it takes to stay in peak physical condition.

Niklas Süle has quickly established himself as one of Bayern Munich’s and Die Mannschaft’s most important defenders and has been a regular starter for both throughout this past season. Standing tall at 6’5” and weighing in at 214 pounds, Süle is one of the Bundesliga’s largest defenders, but also one of the quickest. He doesn’t let his strong, physical physique slow him down at all.

The towering center-back admitted, however, in a recent interview at the Prom Am golf tournament in Munich (captured via Merkur.de) that he’s already working hard to shed extra weight he gained while on holiday after this past season ended. At the golf tournament, he was one of the only players involved wearing long sleeves, which he revealed was an effort to try and sweat off some of the extra weight:

I gained weight on vacation, so I used the round to really work up a sweat so that my weight goes back down.

On his own admission, Süle is not very active when he’s on holiday, but he’s committed to making sure he shows up to Bayern’s preseason camp having burned all the extra weight gained while on holiday:

And obviously it’s also a little fun, too. But I’m inclined sometimes to do nothing during my vacations. Every player had the right to shut off once in a while. What’s important is that I get it back down by July 12. And I’m confident in that.

Süle also said that back when he was with Hoffenheim from 2013-2017, he struggled keeping his weight down because he really enjoyed eating what he wanted without any dietary restrictions. He made over 100 competitive appearances for Hoffenheim before moving to Bayern in 2017 and he’s been in peak physical condition ever since he came to Munich.

For a player of his size, he moves a lot quicker than you would think, which makes him such a complete defender in addition to his physical strength and aerial dominance. The amount of times he’s able to bail Bayern out of danger using his speed to track back and sweep up potential scoring opportunities is part of what makes him so important to the back line that’s already added both Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez.
