Per a report from kicker, Manchester City has won the sweepstakes for Atlético Madrid defensive midfielder Rodrigo “Rodri” Hernandez. The 22-year-old has opted for an immediate future that includes a spell working under Pep Guardiola.

Bayern Munich’s effort to land the rising star looks like it was all for naught.

FC Bayern will not get one of their favourite players: Rodrigo has opted for Manchester City. The record champion could now invest the money elsewhere. After four weeks of reflection, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder from Atletico Madrid has opted for the English over the German champions. Rodrigo, whose committed transfer fee is 70 million euros, wants to play for Pep Guardiola.

It was reported earlier in the week that Rodri was closing in on a deal with Manchester City, but now it appears that it is strictly a matter of time before the transaction is finalized for the defensive midfielder. The Daily Mail noted where Bayern saw Rodri potentially fitting into its future and also how City plans to use him:

Rodri’s decision to snub Bayern for City will come as a blow to the German champions, who had lined him up as the perfect man to replace Javi Martinez in defensive midfield. His arrival in Manchester could prove shrewd business for City as the 6ft 3in Spain international is seen by many as a strong alternative option to Fernandinho.

Despite the reports, there has been no formal announcement made by any of the parties involved, so stay tuned.
