Bayern Munich defender Lars Lukas Mai is one of the key young players that is expected to test the transfer waters this summer. At 19, many — including Mai himself — think that the center-back is ready for first-team football.

Given that Bayern’s current depth chart at central defense includes Niklas Süle, Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, Lucas Hernandez, and Benjamin Pavard, it is not a stretch to think that Mai should look to leave Säbener Strasse in hopes of finding first-team minutes.

In light of the recent news that Hummels might bolt to Borussia Dortmund and persistent rumors that Boateng is also set to leave, however, Mai is delaying his potential exit until he can get a view of what the picture looks like for the 2019-2020 season at center-back for Bayern.

Should Hummels and Boateng both exit, and if Bayern fails to add another player, Mai could be in line for a first-team roster spot. Per Sport1 and TZ reporter Jonas Austermann, Mai is going to see how things play out with 2014 World Cup winners before he addresses his own situation.

By the way, junior player Lukas Mai (19) is closely observing the situation in the Munich defense. According to our information he can imagine staying with the #FCBayern — if there is a chance at playing time.

Mai has been linked with FC Nürnberg and could ultimately be a potential target for quite a few Bundesliga teams. Whether he would leave via loan or a full transfer remains to be seen.
