According to a report by kicker, Bayern Munich are making a serious effort to sign Leroy Sane from Manchester City. The young winger is considered surplus to requirements by Pep Guardiola, and the ties between the Catalan and the Bavarians could facilitate an amicable deal between the two clubs.
This is not the first time that Sane has been the subject of transfer speculation at Bayern. Three years ago, the young winger was linked with a move to the Bavarians from his parent club Schalke 04. However, since the club already had Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Douglas Costa, and Kingsley Coman at the time, the transfer never came through and the youngster signed for Manchester City instead.
At City, Sane matured into an excellent winger, notching up some incredible numbers in Pep Guardiola’s system. However, recently the 23-year old has found it more and more difficult to break into the starting lineup, with even Riyad Mahrez being preferred over him. Therefore, Sane, whose contract runs out in 2021, could be open to a move away from Manchester.
According to kicker, existing ties between Pep Guardiola and the Bayern Munich board could help push the transfer along, as it would be the preferred outcome of all parties involved. However, the Citizens are unlikely to give up a talent like Sane for anything less than a king’s ransom, so it remains to be seen if that becomes a deal-breaker.
Recently, Uli Hoeness claimed that Bayern would not sign any player for a fee greater than €80m this summer, but it seems unlikely that such an amount would be enough to land someone of Sane’s caliber.
Signing Leroy Sane would be a timely coup for the bosses, given that Bayern are in desperate need of new wingers at the moment. While players like Lille’s Nicolas Pepe and Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa are also available, Sane is by far the best young winger on the market and the Bavarians would be extremely lucky to sign him.
