Eintracht Frankfurt forward Ante Rebic was one of the names linked to Bayern Munich throughout the summer of 2018 and now the 25-year-old Croatian star is once again allegedly on the radar of Die Roten.
Per a report by kicker, Bayern coach Niko Kovac would like to bring in his former player, but not everyone on Säbener Strasse is convinced of Rebic’s technical ability.
Those responsible at FC Bayern are still searching for reinforcements for the wings. As already prior to the season, Ante Rebic (25, contract until 2022) of Eintracht Frankfurt is once again playing a part, especially since there are abundant uncertainties surrounding Callum Hudson-Odoi (Achilles-tendon rupture, Chelsea transfer ban, competitors). And Rebic? Bayern coach Niko Kovac appreciates the force and will of his Croatian compatriot and former protégé, but internally not everyone is convinced of his technical quality.
Bayern had previously been rumored to be involved in the sweepstakes for Rebic’s teammate Luka Jovic. The 21-year-old Serbia international has seemingly been stricken from the Bavarians’ list of transfer targets since he was purchased by — and subsequently signed a contract extension with — Eintracht Frankfurt.
BFW Analysis
Rebic certainly has the physical ability to play at Bayern given his speed and strength, but he has fallen a bit behind Jovic and perhaps even Sebastien Haller in the pecking order of important offensive players for Die Adler.
The timing of this rumor is odd, but it probably should not be totally discounted. It may be safely assumed that Bayern is kicking the tires on Rebic and taking a close look at him, given the injury history of both Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry, along with the inexperience of Alphonso Davies.
A cynic looking at this rumor might say that it is awfully convenient that this news hits the press as Bayern is allegedly already in hot pursuit of Timo Werner. Who doesn’t like a little leverage during negotiations? Conceivably, Bayern could acquire both players, but this might be no more than a negotiating tactic. Bayern has reportedly already said it views Werner as an athlete who can also play out wide, in addition to playing as a striker.
