This is bad. Really bad. (Update: It got worse.)

As Bayern Munich cruise against Fortuna Dusseldorf (currently up 3-0), Manuel Neuer just pulled up injured. As far as we know, it looks like a foot injury.

In the 51st minute, Neuer rushed out of his box to intercept a stray ball and send it back to the defenders, as he has done several times during the game. However, in doing so, the Bayern captain seemed to pull up with some sort of discomfort, and immediately took his gloves off. He knew he wasn’t going to able to continue.

Sven Ulreich came on for Neuer, who walked off the pitch under his own power while in deep consultation with Dr. Muller-Wohlfahrt. The fact that he was able to walk suggest that it wasn’t another metatarsal injury, which would have been devastating. Instead, it looks like some kind of muscle injury.

The captain’s armband has gone to Thomas Muller, who will have to close out the game. Hopefully it’s nothing serious for Neuer, but the way he immediately pulled up doesn’t inspire confidence. With big games coming up and an epic fight for the title on the line, Bayern Munich cannot afford losing its goalkeeper and captain at this stage.

Update: Hummels is injured too

Near the end of the game, Mats Hummels was seen limping and clutching his right thigh. It looks like a hamstring injury.

The game ended so Bayern didn’t have to play with with 10 men, but this win looks to have been very costly.
