Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman reportedly got into a heated confrontation at practice this morning and exchanged punches before the fracas could be broken up by teammates.
According to a report by Bild+, the players scuffled during a practice that was supposed to be closed to the media. What could have caused the teammates to go full Rocky Balboa? Per the report, the players exchanged words before they started throwing haymakers.
While they were training positions in the latter part of a late-morning practice, Lewandowski made a remark to Coman that set the French star off. A heated exchange ensued as they came together. Then the fists began to fly. Bild says the two forwards struck each other in the face.
Defenders and all-around big men Niklas Süle and Jérôme Boateng leaped into action to break up the brawl, but even they needed the assistance of other players. Even after the bulky defenders intervened, the two combatants allegedly wanted more of each other.
Oddly enough, although Bayern coach Niko Kovac was going to send both players to the showers, but he changed his mind and continued the session with both players still participating. Bild claims that everyone was surprised at the decision to continue.
BFW Analysis
Fights during practice happen. It’s a part of nearly every team at some point. It would appear that Kovac’s training this week has been both intense and physical, given that Corentin Tolisso had to leave yesterday’s practice after a collision with Thiago Alcantara.
Lewandowski is not really a player to be trifled with. An avid fitness freak and kickboxing devotee, the Poland international just posted this to Instagram on Wednesday. Not to mention the fact that his wife, Anna, is a karate champion.
Of course, this is not the first time Lewandowski has had a scuffle at practice. Last year, Lewandowski and Mats Hummels had to be separated by teammates after a heated verbal exchange.
Hopefully neither player sustained any major, minor, visible or even emotional damage. If so, this could drag out longer that is really warranted.
