Here’s some fresh speculation on the future of James Rodriguez. With the Colombian superstar seemingly surplus to requirements at Bayern Munich and unwanted by his parent club Real Madrid, it seems almost inevitable that he will be playing for a new team next season. What team might that be? Well, according to James’ father-in-law, it may just be Napoli.
Speaking on a radio show called Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli (yes, really) Hernan Ospina, father of James’ ex-wife Daniela Ospina (in case that surname sounds familiar, she is indeed the sister of former Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina, veteran of many 5-1 scorelines), had this to say on the matter [via Football Espana]:
My daughter Daniela told me that he has a great relationship with Carlo Ancelotti and would be happy to reunite with him.
I think he would one day like to play in Italy and of course at a big club like Napoli. All Colombian players would like to have an experience in Serie A.
The appeal of the championship has increased a lot since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.
This isn’t the first time that James has been linked with Napoli, and it certainly won’t be the last as long as Carlo Ancelotti is the manager there. James’ best ever individual season came under Carlo when the two were together at Real Madrid in 2014/15 — it’s only been downhill for the both of them ever since (aside for a brief uphill stretch for James under Jupp Heynckes).
So, um, here’s a PSA: don’t believe this rumor. If James goes to Italy, it’s most likely going to be Juventus, not Napoli, who land him — Ancelotti be damned.
