Ahead of Wednesday’s massive Champions League game against Liverpool, Bayern Munich host Wolfsburg at the Allianz Aren. , The goal will be to assume top spot in the league above Borussia Dortmund. Niko Kovac will have to balance rotation against choosing a lineup strong enough to win. How will he handle the situation?
The injury listing makes for a depressing read. Arjen Robben injured his calf and will be out for several weeks, and Corentin Tolisso won’t return from his ACL injury until the end of the month. There was some optimism that they may be ready in time for Liverpool, but those hopes have been (predictably) dashed to the ground.
Kingsley Coman and David Alaba are also unlikely to feature. Alaba has yet to return to training after recovering from tendonitis, while Coman has not yet completed a full session. Niko Kovac may opt to give both players an extra few days of prep to get ready for Liverpool, but that leaves Bayern Munich’s left flank dangerously thin.
Let’s talk about the lineup. Robert Lewandowski is sure to start, and Wolfsburg are his favorite opponents. Hopefully, he continues his form against them. James Rodriguez may be given another run out, likely at the expense of Thomas Muller who is will miss the second leg against Liverpool. On the wings, Franck Ribery an Serge Gnabry are the only players fit enough to start.
In midfield, Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez will likely continue the partnership that’s been so successful these past few weeks. Leon Goretzka is back in the squad and ready for selection, but it’s not likely that he’ll displace either player — instead, perhaps he can slot in at #10 in the place of James.
In defense, because of Alaba’s absence, Rafinha will have to slot in at left back, leaving the Joshua Kimmich as the only option on the right. This is far from ideal, as he is suspended for the Liverpool game, but what can you do?
Well, without further ado, here are our predictions for the lineup:
️ Kovac on #FCBWOB: "This is a very important game for us. We're on a good run and we want to continue that on the weekend. Wolfsburg are also in good form - they are the second best away team in the league. We need to be on red alert." #FCBayern #MiaSanMia pic.twitter.com/wHicJj0Sp0— FC Bayern English (@FCBayernEN) March 7, 2019
