The recent transfer activity of Bayern Munich has given a clear indication that the team is undergoing a massive roster overhaul. No current area of the roster looks as certain for upheaval as the defensive unit.

The upcoming summer transfers of VfB Stuttgart defender Benjamin Pavard and Atletico Madrid’s Lucas Hernandez will give the back line a younger, quicker look. With those additions, however, the roster has become a bit crowded.

Current defensive stalwarts Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng are both 30 and could find themselves in a true battle for playing time with Niklas Sule (23,), Pavard (23), and Hernandez (23) if both 2014 World Cup winners remain on the roster for the 2019/2020 season.

The likelihood of that happening is not great. According to a report from Süddeutsche Zeitung, Boateng will exit Bavaria this summer.

According to SZ information, it is certain that Boateng will leave the club.

Boateng has been an excellent defender over the course of his tenure with Bayern, but undoubtedly still sees himself as more than a deep reserve at this stage of his career. Boateng could be a productive player and starter for many teams in Europe, which should give him a multitude of opportunities to extend his playing days.

If Boateng has already communicated his intentions to Bayern, it could explain why the rumors of Bayern still pursuing Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt are floating.
