The first members of Bayern Munich that Lucas Hernández will get to know more closely are apparently the team’s medical staff. In the club’s official announcement of his signing — Bayern have signed Hernández from Atletico Madrid for a record-breaking €80 million — chief team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt revealed that Hernández’s medical examination brought to light an injury that required immediate surgery. Müller-Wohlfahrt said,

During the medical examination we found damage to the medial collateral ligament in the player’s right knee that requires a surgical repair. Based on experience, Lucas Hernández will be available for FC Bayern by the start of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season.

Hernández has struggled with a knee injury for much of the 2018-2019 season. He initially injured his knee in December, missing some three weeks before making his comeback against Girona in the Copa del Rey. Hernández reinjured his knee in Atletico’s derby against Real Madrid on February 9 and has not played for Atletico since.

After surgery, he might have already played his final match for Atletico. He reportedly was set to rejoin the team and play again, but Bayern’s medical examination has put that plan on ice, perhaps permanently.

Welcome to Bayern, Lucas! Looks like you will fit right in.
