With Joshua Kimmich suspended due to yellow card accumulation and David Alaba just back at practice after battling a tendon injury, the depth at outside-back is very thin for Bayern Munich.
Although 33-year-old veteran Rafinha is ready to step into one of the outside-back slots, it is also possible that Jerome Boateng could get pushed out wide, should Alaba be unable to play. In an interview with kicker that was captured by 101GreatGoals.com, the veteran spoke about the possibility of a move:
Prior to the Liverpool game, kicker have spoken to Bayern defender Jerome Boateng. Bayern have one specific selection issue to contend with. Joshua Kimmich is out for the Liverpool match through suspension. Rafinha could be deployed at right-back against the Reds, however Jerome Boateng has revealed he could play in the full-back slot. He said:
“I would not have a problem with that. If I can help the team in this position, I’m ready.”
If Boateng does play at right-back, he’s likely to have the job of trying to contain Mo Salah.
Given Alaba’s improvement, any thought of having to shift Boateng out wide may be moot, but it does give Niko Kovac an interesting option should their be a setback for Alaba.
