Last November, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge talked about Bayern Munich’s interest in hosting the UCL 2021 final and now it is official! The mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, confirmed the intent to apply to BILD:
I think it’s right for Munich, that we apply. I will support the application. We will see if it [the application] will be successful.
The application document must be formally submitted to the European Football Union by Friday February 15th. The final decision for the 2021 host stadium will be announced in May. Currently, the only competitor that Munich faces is St. Petersburg, Russia per UEFA.
Munich has hosted the Champions League final three times. In 1993 Olympique Marseille defeated AC Milan 1-0 in the Olympic Stadium, while Borussia Dortmund won 3-1 over Juventus in 1997. In 2012, Bayern lost the first final at the Allianz Arena on penalties against Chelsea.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recalled the notorious 2012 final, but remained positive.
Despite the disappointment of the defeat to Chelsea in 2012, we still look back fondly on the ‘Finale dahoam’ [final at home]. We would be very grateful if UEFA gave us the opportunity to again welcome the football world to Munich.
If the final is played in Munich, it could come as a bonus motivator for Champions League success. If Bayern goes through the major overhaul this summer, maybe the 2021 final will mark the new era of Bayern’s performances, just as it did in 2012.
