Bayern II lose to table-topping Duisburg

A week after losing to bottom-of-the-table Carl Zeiss Jena, Bayern Munich II have now lost to top-of-the-table Duisburg.

Despite a brace from Otschi Wriedt, Bayern Munich II lost 3-2 to Duisburg on Sunday. In their last seven matches, Bayern II only have one win. Everyone knew coming into the season that there would be struggles for the team of mostly kids playing against fully-grown men for the first time, and it’s an adjustment period for many Bayern supporters.

Duisburg showed why they are favorites for promotion with a solid first half, culminating in two goals in the 31st and 36th minutes. Tim Albutat and Vincent Vermeij capitalized on mistakes from the young Bayern II defense and put Duisburg up 2-0 heading into the halftime break.

Bayern II showed signs of life in the 55th minute was Sarpreet Singh was fouled in the penalty area. Wriedt stepped up and converted the spot kick to pull Bayern back within one. Lukas Scepanik put Duisburg back up by two with a goal in the 67th minute. Bayern II, however, fought back, and Wriedt scored a second goal in stoppage time. Unfortunately for Bayern II, it was just too little too late.

After 18 games in the 3.Liga, the Bavarians are sitting on 22 points after 18 matches. This is good for 15th in the 20-team table, five points clear of the relegation zone. However, the 3.Liga table is so close that had Bayern II beaten Duisburg, they would’ve jumped all the way into 11th place (maybe even higher).

Bayern II have two more matches in the 3.Liga season before they enter the winter break. Next weekend, Bayern will host former Bundesliga champions Kaiserslautern. FCK are riding a four match winning streak after a terrible start to the season that saw them with only 13 points 14 matches.
