No talks between Bayern Munich and João Cancelo or Manchester City (Sky Sport)
Bayern Munich has been on the market for a right-back to enable Joshua Kimmich to play permanently in midfield while Benjamin Pavard is needed at center-back. They have been linked to several players, including Manchester City’s João Cancelo. Sky Sport reports that, despite those rumors, Bayern has not yet approached either the player himself or the club.
Cancelo has played little under Pep Guardiola this season, and both he and the club are “not averse” to a winter transfer or loan. At present, however, the trail to Germany is cold.
Philippe Coutinho to return to the Premier League (Mundo Deportivo)
Mundo Deportivo takes a positive view of Philippe Coutinho’s season in Bavaria, noting his seven goals this season, as grounds to speculate that FC Barcelona might sell the forward to a Premier League club should Bayern decline to exercise its purchase option. They write,
In light of Coutinho’s revaluation, and if Bayern does not exercise its purchase option, the Premier League could open its doors to the Brazilian again. Chelsea, having served its punishment [i.e. transfer ban] by FIFA could consider a move for him, just as Manchester United or Tottenham could, clubs that showed interest in the Brazilian last summer. At Barca, they are confident that if Coutinho finishes the season well, his price will not fall below €100m.
A price of €100m would probably exceed what Bayern would be willing to pay for Coutinho. Despite his exemplary conduct at the club, he has thus far not made a major impact on the pitch in games against top-table teams in the Bundesliga. All that could change, of course, should he continue to improve during the Rückrunde.
Be that as it may, on a happy personal note, Coutinho and his family were able to celebrate their daughter Maria’s birthday in Brazil for the first time this year. Judging by their Instragram photos, it looks like it was a real extravaganza. The Coutinhos had not been able to celebrate at home before because of the Liverpool and Barcelona’s fixtures around Christmas.
Sané to stay with Manchester City until the summer? (Mirror)
The Mirror claims that,
Man City win Leroy Sane transfer battle with crocked winger set for Etihad stay
“Crocked winger” — what? Oh, that’s apparently British slang for “injured, unable to play.” You learn something new every day.
Ahem, anyway: “Leroy Sane is set to stay at Manchester City until the end of the season — but is still expected to join Bayern Munich next summer.”
The Mirror cites the Daily Star for their info, so you have it at third hand from us. The story doesn’t seem to be online, but you can read a decent article there about “Man City’s Collapse” under Guardiola this season.
