Lady luck wasn’t on Hansi Flick nor his Bayern Munich side against Bayer Leverkusen yesterday. Winning their first four games under Flick with a combined goal difference of 16-0, a home loss against Leverkusen abruptly ended the ‘Flicki Flaka’ honeymoon.
Flick commented after the game:
Of course, it is frustrating to lose a game like this after having so many chances...but I can’t complain about the team, they have once again played very well.
Leverkusen, who sits in a 7th place after yesterday’s win, has had a mediocre start to the season albeit with room and time for improvement. Flick praised Peter Bosz’s side:
They have so much pace in their team, like no other team in the Bundesliga. They are well organized, good in combination play. It’s a lot of fun to watch them play.
Bayern, who hit the woodwork three times yesterday, should be considered unlucky yesterday and overall played very well. Flick comments on the parade of missed opportunities:
We have been wasteful with our chances. But I can’t say anything about the teams fighting spirit, creativity and overall how we played…but of course, loosing after such a game feels tough.
Lastly, Flick commented on the game-plan:
We defend quite high up the pitch and when you then once or twice come too far from the opponents then it gets dangerous on the counter attacks. Kevin Volland played very well, receiving the balls and playing them out on the flanks to the quick players they have. We knew they are dangerous on the counter attacks but it’s hard to defend against them.
If Möncengladbach wins today, Die Fohlen will be four points ahead of Bayern Munich. Next game, away versus Mönchengladbach will, therefore, be crucial. A loss there and Flick will have gone from being celebrated to doubted and Bayern’s superiority in the Bundesliga will be seriously challenged.
