Not all Bayern Munich fans are convinced of Joshua Kimmich playing in the midfield. Many think that since he is world-class at right-back he should just stay in that position. Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, however, supports Kimmich in the midfield and talked about how much he loves playing alongside him in the middle of the park. Goretzka told Bild,
Last year, when we had the crisis in the fall, we also played together at the 6. I’m always glad to play with him there. Joshua is an extremely intelligent player. He knows my strengths! He knows how he can effectively bring them into the game.
In Hansi Flick’s first game in charge of Bayern, he put Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich in midfield together along with Thomas Müller, fielding an all-German midfield. They were able to maintain a clean sheet and help make up for Bayern’s humiliating loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Leon Goretzka has not seen much action this campaign on account of injuries, but he had a standout debut campaign last year. In his first season coming from Schalke, Goretzka logged over 10 combined goals and assists last year. Three of Goretzka’s goals were assisted by Joshua Kimmich. Goretzka spoke more about their relationship on the field, saying,
That worked wonderfully against Piraeus! I don’t know the exact statistics, but he has assisted most of my goals. That’s a sign that we understand each other well on the pitch.
With Flick now in charge of Bayern there are many questions that his appointment brings, the most salient being, “How will he lineup Bayern Munich?” This year, we saw Kovac replace Thomas Müller with Philippe Coutinho, reduce Thiago’s game time because of so-so performances, and rotate Kimmich constantly from the defense to the midfield. Bayern Munich has been anything but consistent with their lineups, and that is perhaps a reason behind some of their inconsistent results.
Bayern Munich is so far off to a glowing start under their new manager, but only time will tell whether Flick decides to stick with this all-German midfield. We may not know whether Kimmich will stay in the midfield this weekend, but we do know Goretzka loves playing with him there. Do you think Flick will rotate the squad this weekend?
