Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng suspended for two Bundesliga games following his red card against Eintracht Frankfurt

Considering Bayern’s current scarcity at the center-back position, new interim coach Hansi Flick may have to rely on Javi Martinez or Lukas Mai against Borussia Dortmund and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Bayern suffered a heavy defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt after they failed to recover after Jerome Boateng got himself sent off in the ninth minute. Goncalo Paciencia was through towards goal when Boateng, rather clumsily, brought him down. Following a VAR check from referee Markus Schmidt, who initially showed a yellow card and awarded a penalty, Boateng was sent off as Eintracht got a free-kick.

While, arguably, the game at Frankfurt causes Bayern long-term problems as it proved to be Niko Kovac’s last, it was today decided that it will be a short-lived headache as well for the Bavarians. Bayern will now have to face Borussia Dortmund and Fortuna Düsseldorf with only one natural center-back, Benjamin Pavard. The question for new interim manager Hansi Flick is if he will either use Javi Martinez or Lukas Mai in the center of the back four or bring in David Alaba from the left-back position.
