When Bayern Munich were conducting their coaching search in 2018 to replace Jupp Heynckes, they gave serious thought and consideration to giving the job to Thomas Tuchel. Bayern of course went on to hire Niko Kovac instead, while Tuchel went over to coach Paris Saint-Germain. Now that Bayern Munich is in need of a coach once again after Niko Kovac’s departure, Tuchel finds himself once again on Bayern’s shortlist.
According to Kicker (via SPOX), Bayern Munich is maintaining close contact with Tuchel. Tuchel will not be the easiest coach for Bayern to sign, though, since he is currently under contract with PSG until 2021. Tuchel has several of the qualities that Bayern is looking for in a coach. For example, he is German, has coached in the Bundesliga before (Borussia Dortmund), has coached a top club, and has an aggressive attacking style.
Tuchel is not the only manager with close ties to Bayern. It was also reported that Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has previously messaged ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino on WhatsApp. Pochettino is now on Bayern Munich’s radar, along with the other top clubs in Europe, since his firing this week. Pochettino does not, however, meet all of Bayern Munich’s requirements in a manager. Most notably he does not speak German. That being said, Pochettino has proven himself a quality manager while at Tottenham, reaching the Champions League final last year and will be a welcome addition to whatever team he ends up managing next.
