David Alaba out with fractured rib

The stomping David Alaba received at the feet of Tottenham’s Serge Aurier has proven more serious than initially thought.

A press release by Bayern Munich has delivered unwelcome news: David Alaba not only will be unavailable to play against TSG Hoffenheim, but a second physical examination by team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt has revealed that he suffered a hairline fracture to the rib. Alaba will not be able to play for an indefinite period of time.

Alaba was injured when Tottenham’s Serge Aurier landed with both feet on his chest in an unfortunate challenge. Alaba attempted to play on, but had to be subbed out at halftime. Alaba made a crucial clearance off the line in the 17th minute just three minutes after Joshua Kimmich equalized for Bayern.

Niko Kovac will have to improvise until Lucas Hernandez also returns to strength. The Spanish defender also is out after taking a knock to his recently operated knee. Against Tottenham, Kovac put Benjamin Pavard at left-back, necessitating that Joshua Kimmich return to right-back. The same back four is likely against Hoffenheim and presumably at least until Hernandez returns to full health.
