Robert Lewandowksi breaks Aubameyang’s record, scoring in first 9 Bundesliga matches

Just another record broken by our Polish ace, no big deal.

Is there anything Robert Lewandowski can’t do? With his goal in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win over Union Berlin, the Polish ace broke Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s record for scoring in the opening 8 matchs in any Bundesliga season. Lewandowski has now scored in all 9 of Bayern’s Bundesliga matches, netting a total of 13 league goals and 19 across competitions. Aubameyang’s record had stood since the 2015/2016 season with Borussia Dortmund he scored in their first 8 league matches, the last of which ironically came in a 5-1 loss against Bayern.

The moment he broke the record:

The goal itself was the result of a rather fortuitous deflection that fell right into Lewandowski’s path, but he made no mistakes with his close control and finish. More importantly, the goal proved to be the winner for Bayern, as Union Berlin pulled one back in the 86th minute after Lewandowski’s goal had given Bayern a 2-0 lead.

Chasing Champions League glory as well

It’s been a fantastic week individually for Lewandowski. Just four days prior to breaking Aubameyang’s Bundesliga record, Lewandowski scored a brace in Bayern’s 3-2 win over Olympiacos in the Champions League, making him 5th for goals scored in the competition. He sits behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Raúl González Blanco, and Karim Benzema.

Hunting down Gerd Müller’s single season scoring record

With 13 league goals in only 9 matches, Lewandowski is also on pace to challenge Gerd Müller’s single-season scoring record. Müller scored an astounding 40 league goals for Bayern in the 1971/1972 season. Lewandowski has never scored more than 30 goals in a Bundesliga season, but he was recently backed by Bayern legend Giovane Elber to break Müller’s record:

I thought that no one would ever manage to break that record. But now I think that Lewandowski can do it. He scores one or two goals every game. My highest respect!

What’s everyone think, can Lewy finally break Gerd Müller’s single season record?
